Statue of George Floyd unveiled in Flatbush as residents celebrate Juneteenth

The artist of the sculpture, Chris Carnabuci, says he wants to channel the emotion of the social justice movement sparked by George Floyd’s death through his art.

A statue of George Floyd was unveiled in Flatbush Sunday as many in the country celebrate Juneteenth. 
A 6-foot wooden sculpture was unveiled in Brooklyn to honor Floyd who died at the hands of a former Minneapolis police officer in May 2020.
George Floyd’s brother, Terrence Floyd, says he hopes that people will continue to remember his brother through the sculpture.
Terrence Floyd kneeled and took some time to look at his brother’s image after the sculpture was unveiled. 
Juneteenth recognizes the day when the last slaves were freed in 1865.

News 12 is told it will be on the corner of Nostrand and Flatbush avenues for a few weeks before moving to Union Square.
