Once a COVID-19 vaccine is authorized or approved, and recommended for use in the United States, you might be able to get one at your local Stop & Shop.
Stop & Shop announced Monday its pharmacies will be among the first in the U.S. to administer future COVID-19 vaccines, once approved and available. According to Stop & Shop, it has a new partnership with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), which is designed to maximize access to the vaccine across the country quickly and efficiently.
It plans to make the vaccine available at its 250+ pharmacy locations across the Northeast. And it will be administered to Stop & Shop customers at no cost.
“We’re proud to do our part in the fight against COVID-19 by joining this critical effort led by HHS - and by making the vaccines accessible for our customers as soon as safe and effective options become available,” shares Katie Thornell, director of Pharmacy at Stop & Shop. “This move to become an early provider is part of our commitment to be a trusted health resource within our communities.”
Both Pfizer and Moderna say their vaccines must be stored in ultra-cold temperature, something not often found in hospitals, doctor offices or retail pharmacies.
"We're waiting to hear more information," said Brittany Orlando, Stop & Shop Clinical Pharmacy Services manager. "We're hopeful that there may be certain periods of time in that storage where maybe for couple weeks it might be able to be stored in just regular freezer storage temperatures refrigerated temperatures like other vaccines. We still don't know yet."
CVS, Walmart and Walgreens are already involved in a COVID-19 vaccine distribution partnership.
High-risk individuals will be among the first people to receive the vaccine, which includes health care workers.
The president has said the general public can receive a vaccine as soon as the spring of 2021, but health experts say it is still unclear exactly when that will be.
Currently, flu shots are available at all Stop & Shop pharmacy locations.
