The intense wind Monday morning caused a tree to fall into a home in Bed-Stuy causing significant damage.
Residents of the home on Halsey Street describe hearing a loud boom around 7 a.m. A tree in the yard behind them had come crashing down. It landed inside their bathroom and the weight of the tree also damaged a bedroom on a different floor.
"I'm still shaken. I am just shocked," said Vee Lewis, who lives at the home with her husband.
Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the damage is eye-opening. A gaping hole is visible where the ceiling meets the wall which is now caving in. The bedroom floor is also now covered in debris and bricks.
"Just last night. We were in this room wrapping gifts. I'm totally shocked," Lewis said.
Lewis says she is also upset. Back in September, she reported the tree to 311 over concerns it was dead and damaged. But she was told the NYC Parks Department couldn't get to the tree because it was located in a private yard and is therefore out of their jurisdiction.
"Had they been able to get in and do something, we wouldn't be having this problem," Lewis said.
She and her family are left with a home with Christmas just days away. The Department of Buildings was at the home to assess the damage.
