A street was renamed in City Island to recognize local legend Richard DePierro.
Depierro was known for owning the Black Whale restaurant on City Island Avenue and other properties in an effort to preserve the area’s history.
The beloved community member unexpectedly died at his home on August 26.
As a tribute to his legacy, Hawkins Avenue was renamed Richard Depierro Way.
Council Member Marjorie Velazquez spoke about Depierro as she initiated the name change.
"His story is like my family’s. They immigrated here and worked on City Island just like Richard. Look at what he’s left behind," she said.
