Students from the Urban Assembly School for Criminal Justice are calling for better pedestrian safety in the 66th Precinct. 

Seniors in the participation in government class set out to prove that the Ditmas Avenue and Dahill Road intersection is dangerous.

"The idea was for the students to develop it on their own," says teacher Sharon Wilcoz-Daiello. "We did a lot of brainstorming, and really pedestrian safety was something that they felt they were really concerned about."

They found that Borough Park and the 66th Precinct have more than double the rate of pedestrian injuries than the entire New York City average.

Students are now calling on the Department of Transportation to install a leading pedestrian interval signal at Ditmas Avenue and Dahill Road by the train. 

A leading pedestrian interval signal would show a walk sign for pedestrians before showing a green light to traffic. 

Students say they need six to 10 seconds more to safely cross. 

A spokesperson for the DOT says it installed leading pedestrian intervals at a nearby intersection earlier this month. The department is currently reviewing the request for one at Dahill Road and Ditmas Avenue.
