Hundreds of students from Ascend Charter schools took to the steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall Friday to demand an end to gun violence.

For many of the students, the matter is more than just a nationwide issue, it’s personal. Rohan Levy, one of Ascend’s very own, was shot and killed in East Flatbush last year.

The group says their actions were also in solidarity with Saturday’s nationwide March For Our Lives rally.

While mass shootings have sparked outrage across the country, Levy’s family says this kind of violence is a reality for many every single day.

"People of color cannot walk to school without feeling that they're unsafe, that they may be shot, they may be robbed,” said Levy’s mother Nadine Sylvester. “And I would love if we could come together and change how the community feels about that.”

Those in attendance said they hope this movement is far from over.
