High school seniors showed how much higher education means to them by holding a march in Cobble Hill Friday.
About 85 students armed with signs -- some reading "100% college bound" and "100% persistent" -- marched in support of a college degree in front of the Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies. The students are submitting applications to colleges such as Wheaton, Smith and SUNY.
A mail carrier was there to stamp each letter and expedite the process.
Called the "College March," the process was repeated in other schools Friday. The program celebrates students' accomplishments and shows young people in Brooklyn and other boroughs that learning doesn't stop after high school, and that opportunities exist for them.
"College was just a dream when I was in ninth grade," said senior Nicole Guzman. Now, her opinion about attending college has changed. "I definitely envision myself being the first in my family. It's a huge step." She hopes her younger siblings will be encouraged to follow in her footsteps.
"When someone goes to college, they get a higher education and they learn more about the world around them, and really have that time to find themselves," said senior Jarrett Tyler Pelton.
