Dozens of children complained of sickness Friday due to the strong smell of gas near their elementary school.
Firefighters say there was no gas leak inside the school. The smell came from workers doing routine maintenance on gas pipes in the Jackie Gleason Parking Garage about a block away.
FDNY Deputy Chief Patrick Clifford says about 65 students felt nauseous and were evaluated by an EMS doctor. The school was not evacuated and no one was taken to the hospital. Emergency officials say there are no long-term health concerns for anyone.
Class went on as scheduled, but parents had the option to bring their children home and many did.
