Students of Trey Whitworth school visited Legion Lighting Company Inc. in East New York in honor of National Manufacturing Day.
As manufacturing declines in the US, companies like Legion Lighting are fighting to compete with overseas production. The purpose of the tour Friday was to make sure students know the importance of manufacturing for the future.
Although the company has been on Glenmore Avenue for decades, many of the students say they didn't know it existed until they visited.
"I never knew it was manufacturing...," said Rebecca Adjye, an eighth-grader. "After I realized they actually do a lot, I've seen a lot of trucks here, so I have realized they're doing a lot of manufacturing and making things, so that's good for our community."
