A recent study showed the chance of getting killed in a traffic accident in Brooklyn is disproportionately higher for people ages 65 and older than for younger people.
In a three-year period, the Tri-State Transportation Campaign found that 180 pedestrians had been killed on Brooklyn streets. Nearly one third of the victims were senior citizens.
According to the study, the four deadliest roads in the borough are Atlantic Avenue, 4th Avenue, Flatbush Avenue and Neptune Avenue.
In wake of the alarming statistics, the city is making efforts to improve pedestrian safety for elderly Brooklyn residents by increasing pedestrian crossing times at crosswalks.
