The Summer Meals on Wheels program is back by popular demand.
For a second year in a row, the food truck will be parked by the entrance of Prospect Park, waiting for people to stop by for a free meal.
“Come one – come all,” said Morgan Monaco, president of Prospect Park Alliance. “This is Brooklyn's backyard. Everyone is welcome and we invite everyone to come out and have a free summer meal. No one should go hungry just because school is out of session.”
Department of Education data from 2023 shows nearly 72% of students lived below the poverty level, therefore qualifying for free school meals.
With the help of Prospect Park Alliance and the DOE, programs like this allow every child under 18 to continue being fed.
“I want to be able to not have any students hungry,” said Amanda Rodriguez, the assistant district supervisor for the DOE’s Office of Food and Nutrition Services. “This is a great opportunity for us to accomplish that. There are a lot of students who are not in summer schools or camps.”
“The truck was stationed here last year and served over 15,000 meals,” said Monaco. “So I'm told this is one of the most popular sites.”
“I was here last year and it was wonderful,” said Rodriguez. “Just seeing the smiles on the kids' faces and, you know, the families are so happy.”
The truck remains open on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends. There’s even some halal food options at select community feeder locations across the boroughs.
