Heat Alert: Flood watch in effect for LI until Friday afternoon

This is the second official heat wave for Long Island, with 95 degrees Monday, 96 degrees Tuesday and 96 degrees (record breaking) today.

Our second official heat wave of the season will come to an end, with the chance for heavy rain in the forecast followed by cooler weather. Islip Airport hit 96 degrees Wednesday, beating the old record of 95 set in 1988. It is officially the second heat wave of the season.
Thursday starts out dry with increasing clouds and rain likely in the afternoon and evening. Highs will be near 83 degrees. A flood watch is in effect for the chance of heavy rain. Expect locally 1 to 3 inches, with more possible in any big storms that set up. Very heavy rain in a short period of time could cause flash flooding. Rain showers will gradually wind down by Friday morning and the day will be much cooler with highs in the low 70s. The weekend and beyond looks fantastic, with lots of sunshine and comfortably warm weather with highs near 80 degrees and lows in the 60s.
OVERNIGHT: Partly cloudy with lows near 75. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. THURSDAY: Partly sunny with increasing clouds. Chance for showers and storms in the afternoon and evening. Watch for locally heavy rain. Not as hot with highs near 83. East winds 5 to 10 mph. Scattered showers continue at night, with lows in the upper 60s. East northeast wind 10 to 15 mph.
FRIDAY: Cloudy with the chance for showers in the morning. Becoming partly sunny and dry in the afternoon. Much cooler with highs near 72. Nice and clear at night with lows near 62. SATURDAY: Mostly sunny and beautiful with highs near 80. Lows near 65. SUNDAY: Mostly sunny and comfortably warm with highs near 82. Lows near 67. MONDAY: Nice with sun and clouds. Highs near 82. Lows near 68. TUESDAY: Nice with sun and clouds. Highs near 82. Lows near 68. WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny with the chance for late-day showers. Highs near 80. Lows near 67.
