A vehicle ended up in the Hackensack River after a multi-vehicle crash late Monday night in Bergen County.

The incident prompted a large response from state police and Bergen County dive teams in Hackensack and Ridgefield Park.

The vehicle, believed to be a BMW X5, was later retrieved from the water.

Reports from Independent Online News indicate the SUV was empty when it was pulled from the river, though officials have not confirmed that information. Those same reports say a soaking wet man was detained at a nearby train yard and may have been carrying a handgun, but that also has not been confirmed by police.

Authorities say as many as four vehicles were involved in the crash, with some occupants reportedly taken to a hospital.

Officials have not released confirmed details about injuries or what led to the crash.

Updates are expected as law enforcement provides more information.
