A driver fleeing police in an allegedly stolen SUV sped through two red lights and struck another vehicle and a mother pushing a baby carriage Monday, police say.
The crashes injured several people around 9:15 a.m. at Rutland Road and East 52nd Street in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, according to police. They also say the vehicle had been reported stolen.
Police say the driver, in a Chevrolet Tahoe, first collided with a Nissan Pathfinder. Its driver injured her head against the windshield. She was transported to the hospital, according to police.
Then the suspect allegedly struck a woman pushing a baby carriage with a 2-year-old inside. They say the woman was transported to the hospital in critical condition, and the child, a boy, is expected to be OK. Surveillance cameras at a nearby deli recorded the crash.
They say another woman pushing a stroller with a baby inside of it was hit by debris from the crash and drove herself and that child to the hospital. Officials say the second woman was a nanny accompanied by a 10-month-old boy. They went to the hospital but were not treated.
Police say they have taken the Tahoe driver, a teenager, into custody.
