A SUV plunged into a 12-foot sinkhole Monday after a water main break suspended subway service and caused a street to be shut down.
Emergency crews say the water main break at 73rd Street and 4th Avenue created the 12-foot sinkhole. Officials say the SUV that plummeted into the hole wasn't able to be removed until KeySpan crews secured the gas line the SUV was resting on. The driver of the SUV was able to get out safely and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
In addition, water flooded the 77th Street subway station causing service on the R line to be suspended between 95th and 36th streets. Daniel O'Keefe, of the Office of Emergency Management, says subway service should be back to normal Tuesday. He adds that pedestrians will have trouble getting around 73rd Street and 4th Avenue because most of the mess won't be cleaned up for at least several days.
Department of Environmental officials are investigating what caused the water main break.
