The HT40 Foundation and the Shoulder Check initiative are part of a mental health movement in honor of late Darien hockey player Hayden Thorsen.
Thorsen's father, Rob, travels around the country, encouraging athletes to check in on one another.
“We might not always know who needs a hand," Thorsen says. "But we all have a hand to give."
Thorsen spoke with swimmers at Chelsea Piers in Stamford Wednesday night.
“If they need a shoulder to lean on, I’m there for them," Fairfield Prep swim captain Timmy King says. "If they just want to talk about life, I’m there for them too. I think that’s really important to have on a team."
“If we can help one person, we’ve done a lot," Thorsen says. "Much the same way the month of October turns pink for women’s health initiatives, or November turns purple, maybe we can turn September this aqua shade, and let it just raise awareness for one another."
The third annual Shoulder Check Hockey showcase will take place in July.
