A new community fridge opened in the Brooklyn Heights area to allow the community to give back to those in need.
The fridge was installed on Oct. 3 in front of the First Presbyterian Church on Henry Street, providing Brooklyn residents with access to healthy and fresh foods around the clock.
"We all want to be a part of something bigger than ourselves - something that lives on beyond us," says the Rev. Adriene Thorne. "What I love about the Brooklyn Heights Community Fridge is that it belongs to the people who made it happen."
The group of community members who contributed to opening the fridge says it was built by neighbors, for neighbors, with the motto, "Take what you need, leave what you don't."
Darryhan Knight, the founder of Downtown Friends and the brains behind the fridge, said the lockdown inspired her to put this project together.
"If there's anything that this pandemic has showcased to us, it's that we are supposed to be living as a community," Knight says. "That when times get rough, we're supposed to be able to look at each other and say, 'Do you need a helping hand?'"
