Stu Sternberg grew up playing baseball on grass and pieces of broken glass in Seaview Park.
But his love for baseball grew the night he saw Sandy Koufax pitch.
"I was shaking that night, I wanted to invite him to my Bar Mitzvah in 1972 so we did, but never heard back. That was OK. It was a highlight of my life," Sternberg says.
After graduating from Canarsie High School and Saint John's University, Sternberg went to work on Wall Street, and eventually made enough money to buy the Devil Rays franchise in 2004.
He changed the team name to "Rays" and switched their colors from green to blue just like the Mets and the Dodgers.
"There was no coincidence, clearly it was a Mets and the Dodgers thing and a Canarsie High School thing. I've got the light blue going on as well," he says.
Even though Sternberg owns the team down in Tampa, he's managed to stay local while living in Westchester.
He says he also considers himself a Mets fan and up until a few years ago even had season tickets at Citi Field.
