Residents of the Cypress Hills Houses say as quickly as trash is removed, it piles back up at their NYCHA complex, and they are hoping for a permanent fix to the garbage problem.
On Friday, News 12 witnessed full garbage bags and furniture piled up on the sidewalks around the building at 1240 Sutter Ave. near Euclid Avenue. NYCHA responded that the conditions were "unacceptable" and that the trash would be removed over the weekend. NYCHA added that it would meet with staff to improve maintenance of grounds.
Residents say they are pleased with the cleanup, but they worry that it is only a temporary fix to a persistent problem.
"They clean up a lot, but it's still filthy in the area and they still need to do more work around here," says tenant Victoria Barkley.
"By the end of the week, it's going to be piled up and they're not going to be able to pick it up on time," says tenant William Joyner.
Residents are hoping for better solutions, perhaps fines for littering and more frequent garbage pickups.
