Third-best slices? Food & Wine's ranking of best pizza states puts NY in 3rd place
Food & Wine recently published its 10 best pizza states in America - and New York came in third.
It gave New Jersey the No. 1 spot for 2021, citing that some of the best pizza can be found in Jersey City. It said New Jersey is "one in an elite group remaining true to their heritage, through long periods of time when others were too busy crashing ahead into the future to care about theirs."
Food & Wine also added that aside from having the best pizza in the U.S., New Jersey also has some of the "best, oldest pizza in America, down in Trenton, where they don't call it pizza at all, but tomato pie."
Coming in at number 2 for best pizza was Connecticut.
It said, "No state wields quite so much clout out of such a concentrated pool of talent, centered in New Haven, which has been one of America's most important pizza cities for as long as there has been pizza in America." It also pointed out the unbelievably thin bar pies at the Colony Grill in Stamford, which has been around since the end of the Great Depression.
New York pizza came in third. The article said that there has always been very good pizza in the Empire State - and most likely always will be, but "a couple of decades into the complete remake of American food, and after years of rising rents, we find ourselves at a crossroads."
The article gave a shout out to a handful of tasty pizza eateries, including John's of Bleeker, Lucali in Carroll Gardens, Roberta's in Bushwick, Joe's Pizza on Carmine Street, Scarr's Pizza on the Lower East Side, Upside Pizza at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, Mama's Too! on the Upper West Side, Paulie Gee's Slice Shop in Greenpoint, Philomena's in Sunnyside and Corner Slice in Hell's Kitchen.
Illinois, Michigan, California, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Ohio and Missouri rounded out the top 10 pizza states.
