For many New Jersey commuters, the trip into New York City can feel long, stressful and exhausting.
But one Maplewood man is going viral for seeing the ride a little differently.
Twice a week, Ollie McAteer boards the 6:26 a.m. NJ Transit train from Maplewood and heads to his job in Brooklyn. Since moving from the United Kingdom to New Jersey, McAteer has documented his commute on TikTok and Instagram, often comparing NJ Transit to public transportation systems overseas.
While many riders focus on delays and disruptions, McAteer says he appreciates the convenience and connectivity the transit system provides.
"I just like the different versions of everything," McAteer said. "People complain so much about NJ Transit. I think it's wonderful."
His commute takes him from Maplewood to New York Penn Station, through Herald Square and onto the F train before arriving in Brooklyn. The full journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
McAteer's videos highlight more than trains and stations. They focus on the opportunities that come with living in New Jersey while still having easy access to New York City.
"You can go in and chase your dreams in your career, but also have that suburban lifestyle with New Jersey," he said. "I think we are so lucky."
After nearly a decade of making the trip, McAteer says the excitement hasn't worn off.
"It makes me so giddy every single time I come into the city," he said.
His message to fellow commuters: sometimes the toll of the commute depends on how you choose to see the ride.
