Thousands of survivors, care givers, volunteers and supporters laced up their sneakers for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K Walk Sunday.

The goal of the walk is to let people know they are not alone in the fight.

Last year, there were 35,000 people who participated in the Coney Island event. More than $695,000 was raised for the American Cancer Society with money going toward breast cancer research and patient service programs.

Data from the organization shows that more than 268,000 women will be diagnosed with the disease across the nation this year.

Survivors say they know how important this show of support can be to people diagnosed with cancer.
