Throgs Neck residents are rallying against the upcoming closure of Ice House Café.
The owners say they were given a notice from the New York City Parks Department saying they must close by April 1, the day the licensing agreement for the property expires.
The owners tell News 12 their proposal to keep renting at the Hammond’s Cove Marina was passed over for a higher bidder.
Although the new agreement requires a restaurant to occupy the space, the surrounding community says they want Ice House Café to stay.
Protesters rallied outside the property in the hopes of saving the beloved Bronx restaurant. Natasha Dambinskas, who grew up helping out in the Ice House Café kitchen, was at the rally.
"It wasn’t always a restaurant, it started out with burgers, hot dogs and we would just make them ourselves,” she said. “Over the years, my family built this restaurant from the ground up."
People at the rally say the news about the upcoming closure has devastated many members of the community.
"This is unfair. They were given nothing but a few weeks to move out and take all their stuff out of their restaurant. This isn't fair to them and the community. We want them here,” said one rallygoer.
"We love this place, the food is amazing, the staff is wonderful, the owner is wonderful. It’s a real asset to the community,” said another protester.
