A proposal to develop a former Grumman facility on the East End into a technology hub could be in the works, but some say cargo planes could also be coming to the area.

EPCAL or Enterprise Park at Calverton is being called the "Silicon Valley of the East." It is a plan to turn the 1,600-acre site into a technology hub.

Riverhead Town Supervisor Yvette Aguiar backs the proposal because the town could make $40 million from the sale.

She says a company like Amazon could one day make use of the runways to create a logistics hub - meaning cargo planes could land there to deliver packages.

"We're talking about STEM jobs, we are talking about research and design, we are talking about logistics, like last mile possibly, that Amazon has," Aguiar says. "I'm not mentioning Amazon is coming specifically, but there are other big Fortune 500 companies that are using logistics hubs."

Reginald Farr, with the group EPCAL Watch, says cargo planes could change the quiet area forever.

"I'm not against a learning center, an aviation hub, if you will," Farr says. "If it goes into cargo, you're talking, I would think a lot of air traffic."

The proposed developer is Calverton Aviation & Technology - a company backed by mega-mall developer Triple Five.

The developer says no logistics hub would be made, saying, "CAT has absolutely no plans to create an air freight cargo terminal...CAT's intent is to utilize the runways for the purpose of encouraging aeronautical startups to design and test their designs on site, to allow corporate jets to bring in executives to connect with their investments and to provide a means for urgent or time sensitive supply chain components to be flown in..."

The town is planning to have a public hearing on the issue though a date has not been set.

If everything is approved, the town supervisor says the land could be sold by the end of the year.
