Flooding downpours, damaging gusts and possible tornadoes are less than 24 hours away from impacting the borough.
The remnants of Debby are expected to significantly impact the Friday evening commute, with the worst impacts likely between 5 p.m. and midnight. Before 5 p.m., much of Friday will be dry with peeks of sunshine sprinkled in. The wind will steadily increase throughout the day, with 30 mph gusts likely as early as noon. It will also be incredibly humid.
All the ingredients will be in place Friday evening for severe storms and a few quick spin-up tornadoes thanks to a huge moisture surge from the south, a clash between the cold air to the north and warm air to the south, and clashing winds above us in the atmosphere.
This is a recipe seldom seen in our neck of the woods, which is why the threat is there for tornadoes. The highest chance for seeing one is between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.. Even if no tornadoes form, there will still be gusts around 50 mph across the borough, with the potential for higher gusts in the severe storms.
Avoid any unnecessary travel and make sure you are prepared once the storms move through. Charge up all electronic devices like smartphones and laptops, and place new batteries in devices like weather radios. Move cars from underneath tall and old trees. Once Debby quickly clears around midnight, the weekend will be fantastic weather-wise. Lots of sun and low humidity is on the way with highs in the low 80s. And next week is expected to bring the nicest stretch of summer weather so far in 2024.
