Heavy anymore, but Kar is feeling the aftermath of the storm. Brooklynites are still out and about and some local businesses just opened up for the day. At around noon, the experience coffee house and juice bar on Rockaway Parkway is opening its stores for its customers. One of their employees says before he starts serving customers, he wants to shovel the snow away and make the sidewalk as welcoming and safe as possible. Uh Open up after the storm is, it's a mixed spot of feelings in a sense because their safety is a priority when it comes to making sure that everyone can at least casually walk through the neighborhood safe. And then at the same time, it's the risk factor of opening on a day when probably most people wanna stay home. So it's weighing out the pros and cons wanting to be here for your regulars. But at the same time wanting people to stay, take, to caution and also stay home too, to be safe. So it's like a mixed batch to be honest. But at the same time, I love what we do here. If you do head out this afternoon, just be careful because icy and slushy roads are still very possible. So, just be cautious as you drive or walk to where you need to go today in Karsi, I'm Daniela Rodriguez News 12.

While you're indoors. What I would like you to do is from your window or your front door, take a picture or a video of what the snow looks like in your area, then post it on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter and use the hashtag in 12 storm watchers. You might just see it here on the air. So let's take a look at some of the ones we've seen here. Um Someone posting this really beautiful view of the forest near their home in the Bronx, uh Benny posting that here thanks to him. Uh We did also see um this sent in from to us from a viewer you can see barely being able to make out the visibility here in the picture just how badly that snow has been coming down throughout the day. Now, one thing we are continuing to keep our eye on though are power outages. If you take a look at this map, all these blue dots, these represent different power outages in Brooklyn where either the power is out completely or partially. Now, I'm gonna keep my eye on this, that you, you guys can have an idea of when the power will be restored. But if you are able to click on it, it should tell you about the time. So this one, for example, 5 p.m. So quite a few more hours for folks here in this building that are without power and it is weather related. Now, one thing I did want to show you from earlier today that we did get also sent in to us from a viewer. So John, he's in this photo showing a DS NY truck that had crashed into some park cars and this was near Willoughby and Wilson in Brooklyn. So this has been cleared out. Now, one of our news, 12 teams went to check out that scene. So thankfully, it's clear the truck has been removed, but just an idea of you to know how dangerous these conditions can be, even our sanitation trucks getting into some accidents here. But of course, take it slow on the road, stay home. If if you can, everything we've been saying today and keep it locked here in 12, we'll have it all for you at the alert center.

No, just continues to come down across our borough. Yeah, we've been watching it out there. Lots of city agencies have already deployed resources across the five boroughs to keep New Yorkers safe. And for more on the city's response to all this, we are joined now by Mayor Eric Adams and sanitation commissioner Jessica Tisch. Thank you both for joining us this morning. Thank you. And I know you ladies have been on the air since 4 a.m. you know, so it's, it's different from when you came in, trust me. Uh we, we've seen the video outside. Yeah, we all do our part to track this and every storm is so different too, you know, with the different accumulation how it's coming down. So what is the plan of tackling this one? That is such a great point. Uh Each storm has its own fingerprint or DNA strand and you have to approach it differently. And that is why uh having Commissioner Tish and her team, uh they are just professionals on how you use technology to analyze and make sure you get plow and but also the layers to doing this putting down of the salt. Um two inches before you plow. And um really encouraging New Yorkers to participate by staying off the road and all of those plans are executed uh, seamlessly and that's happening. Commissioner too. It sure is. Uh, we've had thousands of sanitation workers out there all night. Uh This has been largely a salt spreading operation so far as the mayor said, we can't plow until we get two inches of snow. We expect in some parts of the city to hit that threshold. Maybe 10:11 a.m. We may be able to break the plows out. But until then we've hit every street, every bike lane, every highway in the city and we're going to keep making passes to make sure that the roads are as safe as possible. Yes, we know the crews are working hard out there and mayor, this question is for you and a lot of people are reminiscing about the old school, traditional snow. Some parents are frustrated but you talked about this yesterday. What was the reason for doing remote learning and not just, you know, closing schools in general. Well, one is the number 100 and 80. We're required by law to, to have 100 and 80 schools days by law. The second is many people forgot that after COVID, we had severe learning laws in reading and math in particular and we have to catch up. The chancellor has done an amazing job. We're outpacing of the state in reading and math. Uh but our Children need as much instruction as possible and we have this tool called remote learning. Let's use it. It is going to get better and better each iteration of it. And it was a smart decision by the chancellor. We don't close schools for no reason at all. We don't do remote learning for no reason at all. We're using the tools that are available to us all and real quick because we don't have much time the storm. It's not done. We're in the middle of it. Uh What do you have, say to anyone that does have to get out there? Well, use public transportation is the best way when you keep the roadways clear. We allow the department of sanitation commissioner Tish and her team to do their job and they do it so well, we get the snow off the streets and then we can go remove the garbage because we both hate rats and we wanna make sure we get the garbage off our streets.
