The Bronx Bombers return to the diamond this week, and what's a cooler way to get to the stadium then a vintage train ride?
The New York Transit Museum is rolling out its historic fleet for nostalgia rides on both the Yankees' and Mets' home openers.
Step off the platform and into a time warp that features rattan seats, ceiling fans and other additions. The Lo-V trains that ran the rails in the early 1900s, six years before the first bat cracked at Yankee Stadium will be riding the 4 line on March 27.
"The first games at Yankee Stadium - people would have taken a train such as this," said Jodi Shapiro, curator at the New York Transit Museum.
The Lo-V that was first introduced into the subway system in 1917 will take one trip departing at 12 p.m. from Grand Central Station and run express to 161st Street Yankee Stadium.
Following behind, the Train of Many Colors, known for its diverse color schemes in the 60's, will take additional passengers to the stadium. There will be no return trips.
"They are reproduction of ads that people would have seen if they were taking the train to the Yankee game. You have products that you may recognize, and products that you may not recognize," said Shapiro.
The vintage trains are brought back into service only a handful of times each year. The opening day tradition began 25 years ago for the subway series.
"It's so popular and so beloved, that there will actually be two vintage trains that will be going uptown," said Concetta Bencivenga, director of the New York Transit Museum, "We see multiple generations of family and friends, an older person will get on and say this is the train I took when I was a kid to my first baseball game."
The ride costs the same as a regular subway swipe.
For the Mets' home opener, the Redbird train will depart on the 7 line from 34 St-Hudson Yards at 12 p.m. on April 4 and make stops at Times Sq-42 St, 5 Av, Grand Central-42 St, Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av, Hunters Point Av, Court Sq, Queensboro Plaza, 61 St-Woodside, Junction Blvd, and Mets-Willets Point.
