There was an overwhelming turnout at the Ukrainian American Club in Southport where a donation drive was held Saturday for Ukrainians in need.

Residents dropped off items, joined the package assembly line, or boxed up goods.

The club said people donated many critical supplies to Ukrainians who have lost everything.

"We're only 40 minutes into our collection and it is overwhelming the generosity of Fairfield and in other surrounding communities," said State Rep. Laura Devlin.

Once cars were unloaded, items were brought to a tent that had new, donated clothing for men, women and kids. Then, items were sent into the ballroom to get sorted out and categorized.

The process was all hands-on deck from start to finish and organizers said the generosity was unexpected.

"Our No. 1 thing were looking for are medical supplies and we just got this huge donation of syringes and gowns," Devlin said.

Some even left heartfelt sentiments inside packaged items that had messages like "We pray for peace for Ukraine...from Connecticut, USA."

"It almost brings me to tears to tell you the truth," Devlin said. "In times of crisis, people want to do something to help, and there isn't always an avenue to do that. Some people have the ahbility to give money and others don't and so this is a way for people to make a difference through this initiative."

The Ukrainian American Club plans to host more donation drives where people can donate unused and brand new items in the future.
