Residents in Dyker Heights say they have been spotting more possums this year than usual.
Homeowners say the four-legged critters are popping up and rummaging through garbage cans at night. The Center for Animal Care and Control says it is rare that possums will attack. Center officials add the animals usually do not spread rabies.
To keep possums away, residents should spray their garbage areas with ammonia. The animal care center also says not to leave food out for cats and birds. If residents spot a possum, they should call a wildlife removal service.
