An East New York soldier lost her leg in an accident, but that didn't stop her from continuing her life with the help of a New England non-profit run by a veteran.
Back in April 2016, life changed forever for Deborah Perez . A humvee she was riding in rolled over on the New Jersey turnpike.
"My leg had to be amputated because it was technically hanging by the skin," Perez says.
The former army specialist built herself back up physically and mentally when someone suggested a retreat with the Travis Mills Foundation.
"We were all comfortable around each other, I don't think we were looking at who had what injury or anything," she explains.
Retired Staff Sgt. Travis Mills is a quadruple amputee. He created this retreat for veterans to receive an all-inclusive-all expenses paid trip to Maine where they participate in adaptive activities, reminding fellow veterans that there are no limits.
The East New York resident says the trip to Maine allowed her to go kayaking, horseback riding and take part in an obstacle course - activities she thought weren't possible.
