Family and friends said their final goodbyes Friday to a father and son who were murdered inside their Brooklyn bodega by armed robbers.
According to the lone surviving worker at the bodega, who only wanted to be identified in a story by the Daily News as "Carlos," the two gunmen entered the store and forced everyone into the basement. At that point, Carlos says a scuffle broke out and the robbers opened fire.
Fifty-five-year-old Mohammed Mansor Abuzaid and his 18-year-old son, Abdul Kareem Mansor Abuzaid, were killed. The worker himself says he had to play dead to stay alive.
Surveillance video has been released showing the two men entering the bodega, located at 309 Utica Ave. Police say they made off with change, cigarettes and lottery tickets.
Brooklyn Councilwoman Dorothy Mealy and members of the Bodega Association are urging people to come forward with information that will lead to the robbers' arrest.
Mealy also says she is launching a pilot safety program, which will include the installation of alarms in several stores on Utica Avenue. The alarms would alert neighboring businesses in the event of an emergency.
"We can't just talk about safety," Mealy says. "[Members of] the Bodega Association say they are no longer going to be a target."
Anyone with information about the murders is asked to call 1-800-577-TIPS.
