A vigil was held today in East Flatbush for a carjacking suspect who was shot and killed during a struggle with police. Police say Shantel Davis led them on a wild chase in a stolen car and eventually crashed into a pole on Church Avenue. When the officers reached into the vehicle, they say the 23-year-old put the car in reverse. The NYPD says one of the officers was holding a gun while trying to put the car back into park when he fatally shot Davis in the chest.Today, neighbors gathered to make a memorial for the woman. Police say Davis has a criminal record, including a few arrests for narcotics. Last year, she was charged with attempted murder, assault, burglary and attempted kidnapping. The New York Times and New York Post report that the officer accused of shooting Davis, Detective Phil Atkins, has been sued at least six times in the past decade over alleged brutality.
