Services are being held Tuesday and Wednesday for an NYPD officer who was shot in Crown Heights and later died.
Officer Russel Timoshenko, 23, died July 14 from gunshot wounds to his head. His wake comes a day after the three men accused in his death were arraigned on murder charges in a Brooklyn courtroom.
Robert Ellis and Dexter Bostic were captured last week in rural Pennsylvania. Lee Woods was arrested in New York shortly after the July 9 shooting of Timoshenko and Officer Herman Yan, who was released from Kings County Hospital.
Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes said he plans to pursue life without parole for the suspects. However, Patrolmen's Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch believes the federal government should prosecute the men, allowing for the death penalty.
The case spurred the state Senate to recently pass a bill calling for the death penalty in such cases. The state Assembly and governor must sign off on the measure before it becomes law.
Timoshenko's wake is from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at I.J. Morris, Inc. funeral home in Flatbush. His burial is scheduled for Thursday.
