Kids at Waltersville Elementary School in Bridgeport are discovering the magic of the written word during National Get Caught Reading Month.
Mary McBride Lee, a teacher at the elementary school, wrote her own book about her experience growing up in the segregated South.
The book captures the spirit of McBride Lee as a 7-year-old girl.
"As my mom used to say, if you don't know where you came from, you don't know where you're going and that's what gave me an opportunity and gave me a desire to write this book,” she said.
Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery read the book to Lee's students.
Avery said it is “an amazing experience having the time to sit and read with the kids and see their faces just light up."
Mayor Joe Ganim attended the reading as well.
"It's so exciting to be here at Waltersville Elementary School, watch the kids, they seem inspired and watching their desire to learn, it's really fulfilling for me," he said.
National Get Caught Reading Month is a nationwide campaign to encourage a lifelong love of literature.
