The New York City Department of Health is telling people to stay out of the water at multiple beaches in Brooklyn.
A health advisory was issued for both Brighton and Coney Island beaches. The Department of Health says elevated levels of bacteria have been found in the water and that coming in contact with the bacteria can cause vomiting, diarrhea and other infections.
Many residents and even some lifeguards told News 12 Brooklyn they were unaware the advisory was in effect.
Lifeguards at Coney Island say that when the water is very bad, the beaches are usually closed.
