Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn) announced a plan Friday to prevent further shrinking of the Jamaica Bay marshlands.
Weiner said without intervention, the marshlands will be gone by 2012. He developed a four-point plan he said will help solve the problem.
The plan includes efforts to double the city?s sewage capacity by 2011. Weiner said the current storage plan allows overflow of untreated storm and sewage water to flow into the bay, which negatively affects the area.
His plan also calls for reducing nitrogen levels in the bay by 60 percent in 10 years and doubling funding for restoration projects. Weiner said he also wants to create an emergency task force to further deal with the problem.
Wiener said his four-point plan is part of the interior and environmental bill that is currently awaiting Senate approval.
