Some students in East New York are learning about rhythm and blues first hand.
The theater department at Achievement First Linden Elementary School is taking students on a tour of history through music.
Theater teacher and writer Tarshai Peterson says the idea came to her to teach about R&B when her students asked her what it was.

To further the children’s knowledge of the genre, music teacher Randi Moses decided to do a play called “R&B Through the Ages.”

Both teachers are showing students that they have a rich history and story that deserves to be told and seen on stage.

“A lot of time through music in elementary school, they hear about Beethoven and Mozart and we need to teach them more add in more about their culture,” says Peterson.
