A new Quinnipiac University Poll shows many New Yorkers don?t want a white candidate shut out of Brooklyn?s 11th District race.

The district, consisting of Brownsville, Crown Heights, East Flatbush, Flatbush and Park Slope was carved out around 1968 due to the Voting Rights Act and is predominately African-American. The act is designed to strengthen the voting power of minorities. Some Brooklyn voters say that can only continue if Democrat David Yassky, who is the only white candidate, drops out of the race. However, other voters say the color of the 11th District is changing as many whites move in.

Both blacks and whites are split on either side of the issue, which has drawn national attention on whether the Voting Rights Act is a product of a bygone era.
