Residents are frustrated after learning that the Metropolitan Recreation Center and Pool in Williamsburg will not reopen this fall as planned.

The center closed at the end of December, leaving many people disappointed.

“I think it needs to be opened as soon as possible. I can’t believe it’s been shut. I’m really upset about this,” said Jake McQuiston.

After months of waiting, the city’s Parks Department announced the facility will remain closed until a capital renovation scheduled for sometime in 2026.

“It’s definitely a bummer because I was looking to get a swimming membership over the winter. You really can’t swim in the winter here in New York,” said Angelo Medrano.

City officials blamed mechanical problems, including poor dehumidification and air circulation in the pool area, for the extended closure.

“The community depends on stuff like this. We try our best to keep the kids out of trouble, out of the streets. I feel like this was one of those main things,” said lifelong Williamsburg resident Jada Molano.

Locals say the closure leaves residents without any affordable gym options. The Metropolitan Recreation Center costs $150 a year for adults, compared with the Equinox down the block, where memberships start at $280 a month.

“You shouldn’t just walk past something like this and say, ‘Oh, it’s just a piece of trash. I’m going to Equinox,’” Molano said.

The Parks Department has not announced any refunds for memberships, but said it will provide extensions when the center reopens.

“The kids need it, the elders need it, the community really needs it," Molano said. "When you neglect these things, it brings out more problems."

In the meantime, the Parks Department is encouraging residents to visit McCarren Play Center or Chelsea Recreation Center.
