Residents of one apartment complex in Williamsburg say their gas has been shut off, and they don't know how long they'll be able to live without the ability to use their stoves, especially with major holidays right around the corner.
The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) says it had to turn off the gas at 125 Taylor St. because of a leak in the basement, forcing residents to rely on hotplates, griddles and takeout.
Tenants at Independence Towers say the most frustrating part about this incident was the way they were informed, namely, through a flier posted in the building saying that there would be no gas for an indeterminate number of days.
District leader Lincoln Restler says Independence Towers is far too big of an apartment complex for residents to lose gas for an extended period of time. He and longtime resident Pamela Cowherd met with tenants last night to demand answers from NYCHA.
NYCHA says in addition to delivering hotplates to tenants, it has hired a contractor to make repairs that are expected to take another four to five weeks. The agency also says it will hold another meeting to provide an update and a targeted timeframe.
