A 65-year-old woman was killed Sunday night after she was struck by a car blocks from her home.
Barbara Tjornhom is the second pedestrian in the neighborhood to be killed by a car in less than a week. She was struck by a car at the intersection of 52nd Street and 6th Avenue, one of the few intersections in the area without a traffic light.
Police say Tjornhom?s death appears to be an accident. The driver stayed on the scene after the accident. On Friday, when a pedestrian was hit at 52nd and 4th Avenue, the driver tried to flee, but good Samaritans held him until police arrived.
Residents wonder why there is no traffic light at the 52nd Street and 6th intersection. ?There?s a lot of traffic, lot of commercial traffic, so that?s a problem,? said David Rivera. ?It created congestion and on top of that, it reduces visibility.?
Tjornhom?s family says the victim was on her way to church when she was hit. They say she had lived in the area for nearly 40 years.
