The officers involved in the
fatal shooting of a knife-wielding man in Brownsville will not be prosecuted, according to a report released by New York Attorney General Letitia James’ Office of Special Investigations.
Body camera footage of the May 13, 2025, incident shows the moments leading up to the death of 25-year-old Damon Louther, who was seen pulling a knife from his waistband and charging towards the officers inside an apartment building at 108 Christopher Ave.
The officers responded to a 911 call of a domestic dispute that afternoon and were met by a woman inside the building’s lobby, who said the father of her children was threatening to kill her.
When the officers traveled upstairs, Louther was in the apartment's hallway holding a large knife. Investigators say he charged toward the officers, stating, “You’re gonna have to put a bullet in me.”
One officer deployed a taser and struck Louther, but he was able to remove the tongs and continue toward them.
The second officer then fired his gun, striking Louther.
He was taken to the hospital, where he died.
The AG’s investigation into the incident, “...concluded that a prosecutor would not be able to disprove beyond a reasonable doubt at trial that the officers’ use of deadly physical force was justified under the law.”
