Rikers Island played host to a baby shower that allowed dozens of mothers to reunite with their families.
Various booths were set up at the Rose M. Singer Center to inform mothers who are inmates about resources that are available to them to help raise a family.
This was the second annual Rikers Island baby shower hosted by New York City first lady Chirlane McCray. She says the event is so important because it gives much-needed support to mothers and expectant mothers.
Items like diapers, clothes and toys were also given out to mothers for their children.
Mothers at Rikers Island say they are thankful to all those responsible for making the program happen.
"This is a dream come true for us because I haven't seen my children in about 12 months, so it was very overwhelming," said Alexandra Munoz Monroy, a mother at Rikers Island.
In efforts to further help mothers who are inmates, new mothers are allowed to keep their babies inside Rikers Island at the Rose M. Singer Center for up to a year.
A total of about 90 mothers and their families attended the event.
