The Morris Heights Health Center could be on the path toward a possible overhaul.
On Monday, Council Member Pierina Sanchez signed her largest investment, a $7 million check, for a new community center with support from Speaker Adrienne Adams.
"This investment is to address our community's calls for increased programming and anti-violence programing for everyone in the community,” she said.
The plan is to convert the current building into a nine-story community center that will have something for everyone.
"It can serve as a beacon of hope, a place for youth to recreate, seniors to relax, and working age folks to exercise after they had a long day of work,” Sanchez added.
The facility would offer health and wellness services as well as recreational activities to keep kids and teens off the streets.
"We need more of them for our youth, for our children and for our elderly," said Morris Heights resident Gloria Aguayo.
Sanchez says they are looking for the public’s input on what they would like to see in the center. She is planning to host a town hall in May and June where people can share their visions.
