A statue of George Floyd was vandalized Sunday morning while on display in Manhattan’s Union Square.
Police say the incident occurred around 10 a.m. They say a person on a skateboard threw a mixed substance on the statue, then fled.
No other information about the incident was released.
The “seeinjustice” art exhibition also includes busts of Breonna Taylor, who was fatally shot by police in 2020, and of the late Rep. John Lewis, a champion of civil rights.
Terrance Floyd, George’s Brother, spoke to News 12 about the latest act of vandalism.
“It's just not hidden anymore,” he said. “They're in your face now…My culture, we not new to this. We just dealing with it different. We not going to react as animals, they think we animals. We're not going to react that way. We're going to keep our composure, keep our love going and continue to fight for our rights."
Lindsay Eshelman, a co-founder of Confront Art, responded in a statement:
"It takes a lot of courage to display the three statues we are exhibiting in Union Square. It also takes a good deal of courage to vandalize a statue on a global stage in broad daylight. This continues to bring light to our mission that art is a conversation catalyst."
