A woman found two dogs dead, abandoned and caged in a desolate Bergen Beach lot over the weekend, police say.
It was not immediately clear how long the carcasses had been in the lot, off of East 72nd Street and Royce Place, or whether they were still alive when they were abandoned and left outside in the brutal, below-freezing temperatures.
"I was up all night," said Lucy Sarni, one of the first people to alert authorities. "I couldn't sleep all night thinking about these dogs that had to suffer out there."
The discovery outraged neighbors, many of whom are pet owners themselves.
The NYPD's Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad is handling the case, and the ASPCA will perform a necropsy, which is like an autopsy but for animals.
