One person has died and 22 others are sick with Legionnaires' disease in Central Harlem, according to the New York City Health Department.
Residents are affected in the ZIP codes 10027, 10030, 10035, 10037 and 10039 ZIP codes, as well as bordering communities.
The Health Department says that those experiencing flu-like symptoms such as cough, fever, chills, muscle aches and difficulty breathing should immediately contact a health care provider. People 50 years old and older, cigarette smokers and those with chronic lung disease or compromised immune systems are at the most risk.
Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia caused by bacteria that grows in warm water in places such as cooling towers, hot tubs and whirlpool spas. It is transmitted by breathing in water vapor that contains the bacteria.
