A fishing trip in Sheepshead Bay ended with a scare Wednesday night after a boat began taking on water and started tipping near the dock.
It happened just before 9:30 p.m. at Pier 1, near East 26th Street and Emmons Avenue. Witnesses say the boat had left around 7 p.m. with 11 people on board.
According to police and the FDNY, the boat made it back to the dock—but was already leaning on its side in the water. Cellphone video from the scene shows a ladder stretched from the deck to the dock as emergency crews helped people get off safely.
FDNY says all 11 passengers were able to exit without incident. One person was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health for evaluation. No serious injuries were reported.
The cause of the incident is still under investigation. Officials confirmed the boat was docked when it began to tilt.
Witnesses at the scene say it was clear something went wrong while the boat was out on the water, and the group had to cut the trip short. One bystander told News 12 he feels for the boat’s owner.
“He tried to do everything he could... I feel bad for him—he’s losing his whole year,” said Joey Haggerty, a longtime Sheepshead Bay resident.
As of Tuesday morning, the boat remains partially submerged and still tied to the dock.
