A 14-year-old boy has been arrested and charged after police say he brought a gun to school.
It happened Tuesday at the Dr. Gladstone H. Atwell Middle School 61 in Crown Heights.
Police say the teen was caught with the gun after school staff members pulled him aside for questioning.
Police say the teen told school officials he had been in a fight outside the school with people who were not students, and he wanted to protect himself.
Police also found two clips of ammunition containing nine rounds.
The Department of Education released a statement saying, "We are incredibly disturbed by this incident, and we maintain a zero tolerance policy on weapons of any kind inside schools."
The gun was removed from the school without incident.
