The first vaccination hubs in New York City opened on Sunday.
The sites are located in the Morrisania section of the Bronx and at the Brooklyn Army Terminal. The other three boroughs are scheduled to get theirs in the next few weeks.
More residents will be able to get their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine at what the mayor is calling "mega sites."
The new vaccination hubs will have the ability to vaccinate thousands of people a day and stay open 24 hours a day.
The two hubs opened for a few hours on Sunday, but starting Monday at 10 a.m. the mega sites will stay open all the time.
The Bronx and Brooklyn sites will be staffed by SOMOS, which is a network of health care providers.
People in group 1B will also be allowed to be vaccinated starting on Monday. That includes teachers, first responders, public safety workers, transit workers and people 75 and older, who will all be able to make an appointment to get vaccinated against the coronavirus.
"Facilities like these will be a route to immunity for thousands of New Yorkers," Says Dr. David Chokshi. "We need more New Yorkers to be eligible for the vaccine in order to quicken the pace of vaccination for the entire city."
Residents must make an appointment either online or over the phone. They will then have to fill out the New York state COVID-19 vaccine form and bring proof of employment to prove they fall into the category.
Mayor Bill de Blasio says the city will be launching a call center on Monday to help set up appointments.
The sites have the capacity to give out between 4,000 and 5,000 shots per week.
